I’m Not A Nasty Dog, I’m Scared

Today is #DogsInYellow day.  A day dedicated to owners of anxious and reactive dogs.

It's important to remember that anxious and scared dogs may be experiencing a lot of stress and discomfort, and it's essential to respect their boundaries and give them space.

Here are some tips to help your dog feel more comfortable and less stressed when walking:

  • Choose a quiet route

Avoid busy areas with lots of people and other dogs. Choose a quiet route where your dog is less likely to encounter triggers that could make them anxious.

  • Use a longer lead

Giving your dog more space to move around can help them feel more in control and less confined. Consider using a longer lead or a retractable lead to give them more freedom.

  • Stay calm and relaxed

Dogs can pick up on our emotions, so if you're feeling anxious or stressed, your dog may feel the same way. Try to stay calm and relaxed, and avoid tensing up on the lead.

  • Allow your dog to explore

Dogs often feel more relaxed when they're allowed to sniff around and explore their surroundings. Give your dog time to investigate new smells and sights along the way.

  • Take breaks

If your dog is feeling particularly anxious, take breaks along the way to give them time to relax and decompress. Find a quiet spot to sit and let them rest.

Remember, every dog is different, and what works for one may not work for another. If your dog's anxiety is severe or persistent, consider speaking with a veterinarian, a professional dog trainer or dog behaviourist for additional guidance and support.

Yours warmly, Zita x
