Stepping into Connection: The Social Power of Walking
Introduction
With over two decades of experience running Pet Patrol 365 and a lifetime dedicated to caring for my animals, I’m a passionate pet lover who deeply appreciates the unique bond between dogs and their human companions.
"Running Ashdown Forest Dogs has been an incredibly empowering and fulfilling experience," Zita reflects. "It's opened doors for me to connect with dogs, people, and nature in ways I never thought possible."
Why I Created Ashdown Forest Dogs:
The inception of "Ashdown Forest Dogs" stemmed from a desire to cultivate a nurturing environment brimming with support, camaraderie, and real-life connections. While walking, I often encountered women who expressed apprehension about walking alone, craved companionship, or felt isolated as the primary caregivers for their dogs. Recognising the limited opportunities for pet owners to engage face-to-face, I launched Ashdown Forest Dogs to fill this void and inject a new dimension into our local community.
Social Impact of Community Walking:
In an era marked by increasing loneliness and disconnection, human beings, as social creatures, crave connection and a sense of belonging. Yet, our brains haven’t entirely adapted to the digital age’s onslaught of emails, social media, apps, etc., and constant stimulation. Community walking is crucial in enhancing physical, mental, and social well-being, addressing all three pillars of health.
Benefits for Members
Here's a glimpse of what awaits you once you become a part of our group:
✅ Forge connections with local dog owners and share first-hand insights.
✅ Celebrate your faithful friend in our private online space.
✅ Join meet-ups for dog walking and socialising with like-minded individuals.
✅ Enjoy a child-free environment to focus solely on your canine companion.
✅ All owners, regardless of experience, are warmly welcomed.
Confidence Boost from Walking:
From my own experiences, I've seen how walking can uplift spirits and boost confidence. Walking with others not only fosters a sense of validation and visibility but also adds value to our connections. As Brene Brown, a renowned professor and author, wisely notes, “Vulnerability is the cornerstone of confidence.” Through walking together, we make ourselves vulnerable, fostering connections that extend beyond the walk.
My Mission
My mission with Ashdown Forest Dogs is to unite fellow dog lovers, nurture a sense of community, promote the health and well-being of dogs and their owners, and advocate for responsible dog ownership and walking in and around the Ashdown Forest. As the founder of this group, I am deeply committed to these principles and strive to positively impact the local dog community and the beautiful natural environment we enjoy.
Testimonials
Amanda's Confidence Boost: Labrador Love
“In March 2023, I stumbled upon a post about Ashdown Forest Dogs. At that time, my yellow Labrador was a young, playful goofball nearing his second birthday. Despite previous obedience training, his social skills were lacking, leading to stressful walks, and resorting to avoidance tactics.
Joining Ashdown Forest Dogs has genuinely transformed him. He loves the forest walks and playing with his pals, boosting his confidence significantly. For me, being part of this community brings a sense of belonging, especially as an older individual still working.
The group's growth is exciting, with plenty to engage in on the Facebook page and the social events proving to be a blast.” Amanda Tourle, Uckfield
Roz's Social Success: Exploring Together
“We moved to the area recently, so the group has been a great way to meet new people, continue to socialise our two dogs and explore the forest, which can be a bit daunting to navigate solo.
The dogs really enjoy walking in a group, and it has had a positive impact on their behaviour off the lead.” Roz Zor, Crowborough
Bumble and Bee's Fun Filled Frolics: Community Connection
“The group has been of great help with our two dogs, Bumble & especially Bee. Bee is a young, very energetic Labrador, and she loves going on group walks as it allows her to socialise with other dogs and have fun safely.
The group also supports its members and their dogs, regardless of fitness level or ability. Zita ensures that everyone can enjoy the Ashdown Forest, opening up parts of the forest they may not know, even though they have lived here for many years.
There is also a fun social side to the group; we’ve had a pub lunch, a Christmas party, and a curry evening, which allowed chatting & exchange of ideas. Other events are planned, and regular polls are held to give every member a say on what they would enjoy with their furry friend. Whether you’re a dog lover with or without a four-legged companion, we’re confident you’ll find plenty of fun and friendship within our community.” Carole & John Webster, Cowden
Conclusion:
As I wrap up, I'm humbled to share that I’ve recently been recognised with two awards: Canine Welfare Champion of the Year 2024 and UK Enterprise Community Impact Pioneer of the Year 2024. These acknowledgements highlight my commitment to the well-being of our four-legged friends and the community. They remind me of the potential we have for growth and innovation.
